Cal|vin|ism «KAL vuh nihz uhm», noun.
1. the religious teachings of John Calvin (1509-1564) and his followers. Calvin taught that only certain persons, the elect, were chosen by God to be saved, and these could be saved only by God's grace. Calvinism forms the basis for the doctrines and practices of the Huguenots, Puritans, Presbyterians, and the Reformed churches.
